No, it doesn’t, at least not to me. Which is why the following headline is actually unworthy of existing:
Can This Kennedy Carry the Torch?
First of all, what “torch”?
There is no torch.
Second of all, who cares? The Kennedys are quickly fading into history and their legacy is not going to hold up well at all. Year by year the truth of Jack’s failings as president become more widely acknowledged, and the rest of them accomplished dramatically less than their aura would justify (boy I’m being restrained today).
And I find it pathetic that the latest individual to attempt to profit from his name is touted as having a “stellar resume”:
This latest Kennedy, while drawing some mockery in Massachusetts, has a stellar résumé: Stanford, Peace Corps, Harvard Business School, district attorney’s office in Massachusetts.
As we all know, certain family names assure acceptance into elite institutions regardless of merit. A resume such as this is largely meaningless.
It’s also unfortunate that the author would write a sentence that is so obviously contradictory:
His twin brother, Matthew, equally accomplished, is serving in the Obama administration.
Serving in the Obama administration…is there a more damning endeavor than this?
No.
To be honest I never saw the shine, the glimmer of anything other than a name and an attachment emotionally to a slain president for that family name. They used the death of a son/brother to further careers. Well the drunk Teddy did at least. But he soiled the name beyond repair in my eyes leaving the lady in the lake. He should have been charged and convicted and never allowed to influence government again.
It is amazing, isn’t it, that he wasn’t arrested and charged. What did he do with the guilt?
He was cut from a different mold, one of the expectation of privilege without accountability. I have no idea what he did with the guilt, but my guess is he found a way to shelve any feeling of remorse and guilt.
